A Cause Worth Kicking For

On Monday, September 28th, at 6pm on the Bracken Lawn, SNU will host its annual charity kickball event, Kick for the Cause. What Kick for the Cause involves is four games of kickball going on at once, sharing a large second base. Each base is a kiddie pool, with the large second base as a larger pool.

However, Kick for the Cause is so much more than just simultaneous games of kickball. When I asked Collin McCutcheon, sophomore and team captain of last year’s winning team, why people should get involved with Kick for the Cause he replied, “Because it is all about supporting a cause.”

So, what is the cause in Kick for the Cause?

“The cause varies year to year,” said Matthew Lawrence, SGA Executive of Campus Ministries and organizer for Kick for the Cause. “This year we are partnering with Love Link Ministries… they are a compassionate ministries that run a food pantry (and) a thrift store,” Lawrence added.

Love Link was founded in 1991 as an outreach to the poor and homeless. While the programs are faith-based, everyone is welcome regardless of religion. In addition to the food pantry and thrift store, a sober living program is offered. Donations will help fund future programs such as an outpatient drug program, job training, dental health program and various after school programs.

Love Link Ministries truly does some amazing services for the Oklahoma City community. Starting or joining a team for Kick for the Cause is an incredible opportunity to give back to the community.

Anyone looking to sign up for Kick for the Cause needs to find a team leader or you can make your own team. Each team should have ten people with at least three girls. Team leaders can then sign up online at snusga.com. The first eight teams to sign up are entered in the event.

Every team member must bring with them to the event either two cans of food or four dollars in order to play. For further information on Kick for the Cause you can contact Matthew Lawrence at matlawre@mail.snu.edu.

If you would like to become more involved with Love Link Ministries, there are several ways that you can help. Volunteer opportunities with Love Link can be found on their Meet The Need page, or you can phone them directly at (405) 239-6219. Donations of gently used or new items can be made to their thrift store during normal business hours and monetary donations can be made directly to Love Link Ministries, PO Box 2023, Oklahoma City, OK 73101.
