The Difficulties of Eating Healthy in College

Did you know that losing weight and healthy eating is America’s number one for the Top 10 New Year’s Resolutions for 2017? 72.6 percent of these resolutions are maintained through the first week; 44.8 percent go past six months.

As a college student, it can be difficult to keep our new year resolution’s on losing weight and eating healthy. Selene Gonzales and Jalayna Liggins, both juniors here at SNU, mentioned that “it is hard to eat healthy sometimes because the cafeteria food is not good.” For many students it results in them going off campus to fast food franchises; obviously, that is not healthy.

Stress eating is another big factor that students face that keep them from healthy eating. We are in college and it is going to get stressful at times. Most of our stress may come from homework, which comes to not enough time to exercise.

College students are typically broke, which is hard to overcome when you are trying to eat healthily. McDonald’s has a dollar menu, Sonic has 50 cent corn dogs from time to time; the temptations are all around us. Now, almonds, fruit, organic and gluten-free groceries are typically out of our price range.

Let’s face it, there are many excuses that we can come up with to keep us from working out and eating healthy, but there are also many tips and experts out there to help us overcome.

One of the ways to keep your new year resolutions is to write them down and post them on your wall or mirror. Seeing them posted every day can help keep you accountable.

I have seen numerous tips on healthy eating and one of them is to shop for healthy snacks to keep in your dorm room. I mentioned earlier that healthy snacks can be expensive; one way to avoid paying for them is to grab a banana or apple on the way out of the cafeteria. Doing this, you will soon accumulate enough to fill a fruit basket!

It takes a lot of self-control to ditch the bag of potato chips for fruit and vegetables, but eating healthy does not have to be something you dread. Take a friend to hold you accountable when you go grocery shopping. Follow nutrition experts on Instagram and get good advice.

Here is a list of websites that you can look to for workouts in your dorm and healthy snacking tips for college students. You can do it!
