The first ever SNU anime club
Last Saturday, I had the pleasure of joining the SNU Anime Club for the viewing of Mamoru Hosoda’s The Boy and the Beast. Afterwards, the Anime Club president, Hannah Small granted me a short interview and a look at her impressive anime, manga, and collectibles collection.
The club itself is well run and very accepting. We began with a minute to win it game ending in the giveaway of an expensive manga book. Small noted that there is a giveaway at almost every meeting, she supplies the prizes from her own collection and will be giving away manga’s, collectibles, and in some cases movies or entire series.
You really couldn’t ask for a more hospitable host then Hannah. As she provides all entertainment, prizes, and snacks herself. She began putting in the work towards the club at the end of last year because of her great interest in anime. Aside from just a viewing party this club doubles as a way for like minded anime lovers to come together and discuss their shared passions.
As it goes right now there have been many people to support the club in theory but there has been a struggle to get a regular crowd attending, though there are a few repeat attenders. The average night will see five people, though Small has hopes of seeing the club grow to a crowd of at least 20 people.
The best part of the Anime club is the fact that there is no obligation, while Small loves to see people come back for more there is no need to have attended before to make a future meeting.
Being an officially school sponsored club Small has access to club funds and as such intends in the future to take field trips with the attendees to comic book stores, conventions, as well as other anime or manga oriented functions.
The Anime Club meets every Saturday from 7:00PM to 7:15PM in the fourth floor hills lobby, although they may run over due to movie runtime. They are really just a fun loving group of people who enjoy taking time to relax and reflect on the smoother side of life. If you would like to know more about the Anime club you can contact Hanna Small or Dr. Bracken via email, or just flag them down on campus either one would be more than happy to have a conversation with you.
