Feature Friday: Marion Broedys

Get to know Marion Broedys.

Where are you from? Bremen, Germany

What is your major? International Studies and Spanish

What are your hobbies/interests?  I love playing golf, riding horses, being outside in any way and talking to friends and family.

What are three words that describe you? Dreamer, golfer, vegetarian

What is a talent that you possess? I can be a pretty good golfer. I also consider one of my talents that I can fall asleep at any time in any place (which is especially useful when you’re sitting in a plane for about 10 hours for example..)

What is your biggest fear? Slugs! Most disgusting animal on this planet!

What is the most important thing that you want the SNU community to know about your home country? Germany is absolutely amazing and beautiful. We have all kinds of different landscapes, a variety of people (especially in the big cities) and probably the best bakeries you will find on earth. Also, since it’s in the center of Europe, it is so easy to travel around there.

What is the biggest misconception about your home country? German people are not Nazis that drink beer all day and yell at each other in German. (I think that sums up the three biggest misconceptions about Germany and its people…)

What is your favorite thing about the U.S.? Especially in Oklahoma, I love how welcoming the people are.

What is something you think that people from the U.S. should learn from your culture? Probably how to play soccer. Sorry for taking the world cup trophy to Germany this summer guys! No, seriously I think that what people in the US could learn from my culture is how to tolerate people and them having been raised differently and therefore having different priorities, values or morals. That’s how culture works.

What do you miss most from home? My dog, my family & friends, bakeries and just having that feeling of being home.

Why did you choose to come to SNU? In Germany, it is kind of hard to combine studies and golf since we don’t have College sports. Having been offered the golf scholarship by SNU it was the best opportunity for me to combine golf, education, improving my English, getting to know a different culture and traveling all over the place.
