Meet Julia Benn, a senior psychology major who has become a true force on campus. With roles as a resident advisor (RA), Assistant Editor of The Echo, and a member of the SNU choir, Benn balances a busy academic and extracurricular schedule while excelling in each area. Known for her leadership and heart of service, she is on a mission to make a meaningful impact in the field of mental health.
Benn, who will soon head to graduate school for a master’s in social work with a specialization in adult mental health, has already been accepted to schools like Columbia University, Boston University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
“I’m passionate about caring for those struggling with mental health issues,” Benn shares. “The psychology department at SNU has equipped me with the skills and knowledge to serve this population from a Christ-like perspective. My time here has allowed me to integrate my faith with my career goals. I’ve learned that God has called me to minister and show His love in unique ways.”
Despite her academic achievements, Benn’s college journey has not been without its challenges. From her parents’ move to Spokane, Washington, to the loss of close relationships and a family member, Benn has faced significant emotional hurdles. However, she credits her faith and the supportive SNU community for helping her navigate these challenges. “God has provided me with the resources and community I need to heal,” she expresses.
One of Benn’s most defining moments at SNU occurred when she wrote her first case study. “I had so much fun with it, and I was really good at it, even with my novel understanding at the time,” she reflects. “That’s when I realized I had found my passion and knew what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.”
Benn’s faith has played a major role in her journey at SNU. “This place has truly shaped my faith,” she admits. “I have developed my understanding of God and faith apart from my parents and continue to grow every day. The mentorship I have received here has taught me how to live like Jesus and serve others in meaningful ways.”
When asked for advice to share with fellow students, Benn exclaims: “Prioritize your academics, of course, but also go out and have some fun. Get connected. Sometimes that means sacrificing sleep, but the memories you make are worth it. And if you are going to procrastinate, at least learn how to do it well!”
As Benn prepares for graduate school and the next chapter in her career, her future is bright. Whether she is working with those struggling with mental health or continuing to lead and mentor others, Julia Benn is sure to make a lasting impact.
