Every year the SNU Music Department School of Music hosts a musical for the benefit of the community of Southern Nazarene. This year the fall presentation of Pirates of Penzance by Gilbert and Sullivan will premiere October 30 through November 2 in Cantrell Music Hall.
This production is an exciting and humorous tale of a young man named Fredrick, who by an unfortunate turn of events winds up as a slave for pirates. As his journey continues, Fredrick must eventually choose between his love, Mabel, or his loyalty to the Pirate King.
Conductor Dr. Melissa Lewis, Directors Rebekah Ambrosini and Audra Faust and Assistant Director Aubrey Ross, as well as the students playing as the cast and music put on the this production. Brendon Weaver and Ryan Smith will be playing main character Fredrick. Along side Fredrick, Catherine Etter and Kylee Bowman will be playing main character Mabel. Laura Miller, who plays a sister in the production, expressed her excitement about the coming production,
“This musical has been so much fun to prepare. It’s been exhausting and sometimes frustrating but it will be worth it when we get to perform, and I am so thankful for the opportunity to get to be a part of this production.”
Laura is a senior Music Education major and is looking forward to the production. This is Laura’s first musical production for SNU School of Music and she is looking forward to it. She graduates next December and hopes that she can be a part of one in the future again. Her plans are to teach music somewhere, therefore she should be putting on musicals wherever she is working, and she is looking forward to that.
Laura said her favorite part about putting the musical together is the eventual actual production of entertaining the crowds and hopefully making them laugh. She really enjoyed the process of auditions and now putting all the hard work into the production and getting to show it off at the actual show. Laura also said that she was exhausted and practically had no social life, but knowing she would be performing for people’s enjoyment made it all worth it.
This event premiered on Wednesday October 30 at 10:00 am for a school matinee, Thursday October 31 and Friday November 1 at 7:30 pm, as well as Saturday November 2 at 2:00 pm and 7:30 pm. Tickets will be sold for $12 per adult, $10 for senior adults, SNU faculty, staff and ASP $10 and students $4 with ID or free with a crimson card.
