SNU Student Life Shared With Parents Through Red Carpet Weekend

October 23rd through the 24th parents will be welcomed back to campus for Red Carpet Weekend. This annual tradition is a chance for families to come to the SNU campus and experience the daily life of a student.

Except for the State of the Campus meeting with members of the President’s Cabinet, parents will be experiencing the campus as if they were a student.

“We don’t have a lot of extra special programming for it [Red Carpet Weekend],” said Marian Redwine, Associate Dean for Student Life. “We just have what’s already going on and we include parents in that.”

The weekend kicks off Friday, October 23rd, at 7 p.m. in Herrick Auditorium with Southern Nazarene Live, better known around campus as SNL. SNL is the largest variety show of the year put on by Student Life.

Saturday morning at 9 a.m. parents will have the chance to address members of the President’s Cabinet while enjoying the new coffee shop. This event makes a reappearance after being absent from the past few Red Carpet Weekends.

While President Gresham will not be able to attend the meeting due to a prior commitment in Africa, both Dr. Mike Redwine, Vice President for Student Development and Dr. Melany Kyzer, Vice President for Academic Affairs will be present. The State of the Campus event is a chance for parents to ask any questions that they might have concerning what is happening on the SNU campus.

After the State of the Campus event, parents will have an opportunity to cheer on SNU at several sporting matches that are happening throughout Saturday. The matches and locations are as follows:

-Volleyball at 11 a.m. in the Sawyer Center
-Women’s Soccer at 2 p.m. at the Home Soccer Field
-Football at 4 p.m. at the Home Football Field
-Men’s Soccer at 7 p.m. in Shawnee, Oklahoma

Saturday night will culminate with Jazz Solo Night in the 405. This gathering, which is open to both parents and students, will be a relaxing way to end the day with a free hot chocolate bar and student-provided music.

For those parents that may be bringing prospective students with them, Red Carpet Weekend coincides with College Days being hosted by the Office of Admissions. College Days lets future students experience what college life is like at SNU. More information on College Days can be found at http://snu.edu/college-days.

Redwine hopes that parents will walk away from the weekend “having experienced campus life, but not just an event…but also that we love each other, that we care about each other, that we have a good time together [and] that we support each other.”

The cost for Red Carpet Weekend is $30 per person and includes admission to all events. More information and registration can be found at http://www.snusga.com/.
