SNU Tennis Team Assists with Hurricane Harvey Relief

However from March 17th through March 22nd, the Southern Nazarene University Tennis Team partnered with SIMS to participate in Hurricane Harvey disaster relief instead.

Hurricane Harvey has been ranked the second-most costly hurricane in the history of the United States mainland since the 1900s. While the news and relief agencies seemed to be booming after the direct hit and about a month preceding the storm, the media soon moved on to the next tragedy. Most people don’t realize that residents of South Texas are still getting back on their feet nearly 7 months after the storm.

The team arrived in Lake Jackson, TX around 6 p.m. on the evening of March 17th. On Sunday morning, they attended Cornerstone Church of the Nazarene– they were welcomed with open arms and hospitality. Women of the church provided lunch. That evening, Pastor Nate Bienhoff, his wife Rebecca and daughter Hannah prepared a crawfish boil. Coach Hibbert expressed, “It was a first for all of us!”

Hard work kick-started the day Monday with their service project. From 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., the team banned together to prime the entire inside of a 3 bedroom house. Over the next two days, they returned to the abode to paint the walls and trim. What would’ve taken someone weeks to complete took the team a couple days. Judit Bassas and Noelia Gomez, two members of the members of the tennis team, said they were both amazed with the amount of destruction that is still evident in the South Texas area. Noelia said, “Seeing the thankfulness on the face of the woman who owned the house made our efforts all the more worth it.” Judit followed up by saying, “In the grand scheme of the damage done from the hurricane, it’s hard to see how we could make a difference, but the people of the community valued our service tremendously.”

Tina Russel Hainbach, an SNU Alum and resident of Houston, not only helped orchestrate the meals at the church, but she always brought over dinner and dessert. Haibach also was able to get the girls half price tickets to the Space Center. The team’s final stop was a visit to the Gulf of Mexico in Galveston.

Servant hood is what we are called to as Christians and is the mantra SNU is founded upon. SIMS enables our students and faculty to participate in acts of service and broadens narrow-mindedness.
