SIMS: Serving Others with Humility and Love

In a world that often is overpowered by pride and self-promotion, it can be refreshing to see a program dedicated to humility and service. SNU in Missions (SIMS) is one such initiative that offers students the opportunity to engage with global communities, leading to personal growth and cross-cultural understanding. With a mission to immerse students in diverse cultures and highlight the presence of God, SIMS stands out as a powerful testament to faith in action.

Kezia Weaver, Associate Campus Pastor of SNU, describes its origin with a hint of nostalgia. “SIMS started as a Beach Week,” she recalls. “It was originally just students and missions coming together.” The program has since evolved from its humble beginnings into an experience where students can serve internationally. “The mission and vision is to get students to go across the world to experience different cultures and help them see that God is everywhere in the world,” Weaver explains.

Maggie Wojan, an experienced SIMS participant, has been on three SIMS trips and attests to the transformative nature of the trips. “I have absolutely loved each one! It is so special to get to experience what the Lord is doing in other areas of the world first-hand.” Wojan’s experiences highlight SIMS’ emphasis on witnessing God’s work in diverse environments. “I’ve been able to see how the Holy Spirit is working and connect with people around the world,” she says. For Wojan, the program has not only deepened her spiritual journey but also forged lasting connections with both international communities and fellow SNU students.

Despite the impact of SIMS, the program is not without its challenges. Weaver acknowledges the hardships in maintaining student engagement throughout the application and preparation processes. “Trying to keep students plugged in and excited through the entire process has been tough,” she admits. However, the program’s commitment to its mission and support helps overcome these obstacles. “God always provides,” Weaver adds, reflecting a deep-rooted faith in SIMS’ purpose and its ability to inspire students despite the hurdles.

During times of division, SIMS reminds us of the unity and love that transcends borders (literally). It challenges students to serve with humility, learn from others, and embrace the transformative power of God’s grace.

For those interested, SIMS not only offers an opportunity to make a difference but also a chance to see and experience God’s work in the world in a personal way. Mark your calendars for this Thursday, September 26th, and join us at the SIMS Chapel to start your own journey of service and discovery.
