From Funnel Cakes to Ferris Wheels: An Evening at the Oklahoma State Fair

From Funnel Cakes to Ferris Wheels: An Evening at the Oklahoma State Fair

Fair season is one of the most looked-forward-to occasions of the year for Oklahomans. The Oklahoma State Fair runs two weeks in September and is jam-packed full of activities, food, and fun. There’s a plethora of rides to try out if you’re seeking an adrenaline rush. With its agricultural and educational booths, the State Fair is also a great opportunity to grow in Oklahoma agriculture knowledge. Because there is such a wide variety of activities, the Oklahoma State Fair is an event that everyone can enjoy, including college students here at Southern Nazarene University.

One of the highlights of the State Fair for many students like Yvonne Vega, is the amusement rides. “My favorite thing to do at the fair is ride the attractions. I enjoy the thrill of the roller coasters, and the adrenaline that comes with them,” commented Vega. Though these excursions come at an extra cost, Vega thinks that the rides are worth it. Another student, Tiana Frantz, also loves the amusement rides at the fair. When asked what her favorite part of the fair was, Frantz responded with, “I would have to say my favorite part about the State Fair is the rides.” Because of the popularity of the fair rides, the lines to get on them are often extremely long. This year, however, the waiting time to get on a ride wasn’t an inconvenience for Frantz. “The lines didn’t feel that long this year even though we went on one of the busiest days,” she exclaimed. With the waiting time feeling like nothing, the attendees were able to ride as many rides as they wanted.

Fair food is a category of its own. Many people stick to the classics, like Frantz, who states, “I always get a funnel cake or turkey leg.” But some go to the State Fair specifically for the strange and exclusive foods that you can only get during this time of the year. Pickled pizza, deep-fried cookie dough, and brisket donuts are just a few examples of the unique fair foods found this season. “There were a lot of surprising food combinations this year, and some people really seemed to enjoy them,” commented Vega. Whether you stick to what you know or go out of your comfort zone, there is always a treat to enjoy at the State Fair.

The Oklahoma State Fair is a perfect opportunity to spend quality time and make long-lasting memories with friends and family. Having gone to the fair with a big group of friends, Vega expressed how great the experience was. “We had a blast, and it was a perfect way to end the summer.” Frantz also expressed her desire to return to the fair next season. “I would love to go again if a big group of us went.”

Even though the fair season has come to a close, students can reminisce about the time they spent at the State Fair. From the strange foods to the thrilling rides, there is a lot to be remembered. “The most memorable moment was getting on the rides with my friends and holding on for dear life as we all screamed,” recalled Vega. Meanwhile, Frantz’s most memorable moment might not be for the reason you think. “The most memorable thing this year was getting on a free ride that ended up making me feel queasy.”

The State Fair returns next September and you’re not going to want to miss out on all the opportunities it holds. Whether you wish to experience the thrill of a roller coaster or try an unusual treat, the Oklahoma State Fair is guaranteed to exceed your expectations.
