Hobby to Hustle: Student Entrepreneurs on Campus

Brisa Lopez, a sophomore majoring in mass communication, is making a name for herself in photography. As the social media representative for SNU Equestrian and a photographer for SNU Creative, her journey in photography began when her Godmother gifted her a camera at the age of fifteen. Initially hesitant, Brisa found joy in capturing moments during events with friends. “I started asking friends to let me practice on them,” she recalls.

For Brisa, connection is crucial. She says, “When I’m meeting new people, I like to have a meeting, so we can build that connection.” This personalized approach helps make her clients feel valued. Her venture into sports photography has added excitement to her portfolio, allowing her to expand her skills over three years in the business. Brisa encourages aspiring photographers to reach out to others in the field. “Don’t be afraid to ask questions,” she advises. “If you know someone who is doing what you want to do, connect with them.” With a strong emphasis on community and personal growth, Brisa is carving out her niche in the competitive world of photography. Lillian Savage, a biochemistry major and member of the women’s golf team, co-founded the company In His Hands Co. Originally a mini-campaign for a leadership program, Lillian and her friend designed merchandise based on the slogan from Jeremiah 29:11. “The merch sold out and went crazy, so we decided to make a website,” Lillian states. Despite lacking formal entrepreneurship training, Lillian emphasizes the importance of learning through experience. “Don’t let the fact that you’re not knowledgeable in all aspects of entrepreneurship hold you back,” she mentions. Over the last few years, she has honed her marketing, branding, and financial management skills. “Running a business will naturally develop your knowledge in inventory control and process optimization,” she adds, showcasing how entrepreneurship can be a powerful learning experience.

Lillian acknowledges the fear of failure that comes with running a business and being a perfectionist. “The hardest part is starting,” she shares. “Running a business is built on trial and error.” Her journey reflects a commitment to growth and resilience, encouraging others to embrace the learning process. Explore her creations at In His Hands Co.

As SNU students like Brisa and Lillian demonstrate, entrepreneurship is not just about making money; it’s about building connections, embracing challenges, and fostering personal growth. These young business owners are a perfect example of the fact that with passion and perseverance, college students can turn their dreams into reality while contributing positively to their communities.
