After graduating high school, many students seek out college to help prepare them for a specialized area of work or get them one step closer to their dream. College is a great place where students can learn how to be responsible and prepare for adulthood. Outside of homework and career preparation, college can also be an impactful environment for students to get to know themselves personally.
Lauren Force, a graphic design senior, leader in SALT, and SNU women’s soccer team player, says, “I think what’s been the most impactful are the skills I’ve built with my friends. Before coming to SNU, I was a reserved person, so having friends help me come out of my comfort zone has been very impactful.”
College seniors have experienced the bulk of being responsible for completing their schoolwork on time and being independent in keeping track of their school tasks. Seniors have progressively become prepared for adulthood, but I wondered how their relationship has progressed with the Lord. Carson Shirola, mass communications major and SALT leader, shares, “Seeing how He has placed people around me that became my friends, brought me opportunities, and helped me to grow through SNU has grown me closer to Him.” Force replied, “I grew up in Nazarene, but since coming to SNU, I have had the chance to make my faith my own. I love going to chapel with my friends and Sunday mornings as well.” She added, “I have learned to give my worries and uncertainties to God, knowing that I am where I am supposed to be, and it is all in His plan.”
Many seniors’ goals for their last year can vary due to different aspirations and achievements they want to accomplish before they graduate, whether it’s for personal or professional reasons. Shirola states, “[I want to] make sure that I gain enough experience to create a strong portfolio.” Force included, “Upon graduation, I’m hoping to get a job in my field. During my senior year, I want to make sure I’m leaving a good legacy with soccer and SALT.”
While graduation is near for most seniors, Shirola and Force have some encouraging words from their four years at SNU. Shirola says, “Don’t worry too much about the future. Just enjoy college to meet people, create relationships, and form lifelong memories instead of focusing solely on getting a job.” Force concludes, “Everything is going to be okay. People here will support and encourage you in whatever you are doing. God will lead you to whatever you will be, so remember to take a breath and enjoy life.” Through Shirola and Force’s influence, hopefully, this allows others in college to create a path for their careers and their social life at college. Remember, college is much more than just graduating with a degree.
