Senior Advice You Wish You Could Give Your Freshman Self

Senior Advice You Wish You Could Give Your Freshman Self

Imagine the opportunity to go back in time to your freshman year of college. All your hopes and dreams in one hand and the nerves and unknown in the other, and you get to give yourself the best advice to get through the next four years at SNU. What would you tell yourself? As graduation approaches, many seniors reflect on the lessons learned, the missteps taken, and the moments that shaped their college experience. From time management to self-discovery, their insights offer a blueprint for thriving, not just surviving, in the whirlwind of college life.

Freshman year of college often feels like a whirlwind–a mix of excitement, uncertainty, and adjustment. Many seniors admit they entered their freshman year with crazy expectations but little understanding of what truly mattered. “I thought college wasn’t even that necessary,” senior David Omosigho reflects, “but it really helped develop me into who I am today–the man that I am.” This realization is a common thread among upperclassmen who have grown to understand that success in college isn’t just about grades; it’s also about balance and personal growth.

One of the most repeated pieces of advice from seniors is the importance of time management. Omosigho also shares, “Procrastination was definitely the enemy of my success. So get a planner, stay organized, and whatever you do, do not wait till the last minute to study for a test.” Tools like planners, note apps, or even simple to-do lists allow you to stay on top of deadlines and commitments. College moves fast, and it’s easy to fall behind if you’re not organized. Learning to prioritize and manage your time early on can create a solid foundation for both academic success and overall well-being.

Seniors also stress the value of stepping out of your comfort zone. SNU alumni Tavita Crisp shares, “ Making friends and networking can be hard, but it will pay off. You just have to be open. You will be surprised at the connections you make, and these friendships will be like a second family to you, especially if you are far away from home.” Freshmen may be walking around campus intimidated to say hi but remember these upper-classman walked in your shoes not long ago. Try not to lock yourself in your dorm room and don’t be afraid to get involved. Go to the games and events, meet people, and let people in. You will learn more about yourself than you think. College is the perfect time to explore interests, make connections, and take risks without fear of failure.

As seniors reflect on their college journey, one thing is clear: freshman year is a time of immense opportunity, learning, and self-discovery. Also, faith plays a significant role in navigating the challenges and triumphs of college life. Whether it is trusting in God’s plan, or leaning on prayer during difficult times, faith serves as an anchor through the uncertainty of freshman year and beyond. Many seniors emphasize the importance of keeping God at the center, even when life feels overwhelming. While mistakes and challenges are inevitable, they are also vital parts of the experience that shape who you become. So enjoy the journey and soak it all in because college goes by faster than you think.
