Saddled Up for Success

At Southern Nazarene University, the equine program is more than just a sport; it is a community of riders who are passionate about achieving excellence both in and out of the arena. As the competitive show season unfolds, English and Western riders showcase their dedication, skill, and unity within the equestrian team. This article dives into the personal triumphs of riders, while also shedding light on the supportive and fun environment that makes SNU’s equestrian team so special.

Show season officially began in October 2024 for both the English and Western riders. From Lubbock, Texas to Las Cruces, New Mexico, these student-athletes are currently in the second half of this competitive season. Felicity Miller, a freshman English and Western rider, joined the equestrian team this school year, and she feels like this has truly enhanced her college experience. She believes that her coaches, Debby and John Letham, do a fantastic job of fostering community and being encouraging in and out of the arena, making her connect and get to know her teammates better. Coming in with Western and Rodeo riding experience, Miller decided to take on a new challenge by riding English saddles competitively as well. Her goal is to point up by the end of this season and be able to jump over fences by the next. For Miller, putting in the work is crucial as a rider. She recommends that any future riders are “all in” or else the competitive experience will not be so rewarding.

Leslie Perez, a sophomore Western rider, opened up about having zero experience with horses when she joined SNU’s equestrian program in the fall semester of 2023. She officially began competing in November 2024 and feels that it has been a rewarding experience. It has taught her to be more organized, positive, and disciplined, and has helped her find a loving community within the team. Her first show at West Texas A&M University was an unforgettable experience that taught her the challenges that come with competing and motivated her to keep working hard. Perez feels that one huge reason she has continued with this program is because the staff makes the equestrian team feel like a family. “Beyond just training us, they push us to improve ourselves and support us through challenges we might face. Their support has made a difference, helping us grow both in and out of the arena.” She plans to continue pushing herself to improve this season, connect with her horse more, and feel more confident. Her biggest advice for future riders is to be patient and trust the process. She says, “Every ride is a new learning experience.” Above all else, Perez encourages riders to just enjoy the ride.

As the competitive season continues, SNU’s equestrian team stands as a testament to hard work, dedication, and the power of community. The riders’ achievements in the arena are matched only by the strong bonds they’ve created with one another. To SNU Equestrian, it is not just about winning ribbons and trophies but also about creating lasting memories and friendships. This program continues to thrive, inspiring both current and future riders to pursue their passion with unwavering spirit.
