Keep your schedules clear for the fourth annual Senior Art and Design Show, which will take place on Friday, May 9th. The show is a come-and-go exhibit of work done by graduating Graphic Design students Katie Simpson and Jeff Carden.
Every year, the fine arts building opens its doors to host students, families, faculty and community members at this free exposition. All are welcome and encouraged to come enjoy the many forms of art produced by the two seniors. Carden and Simpson will showcase their best work from their years at SNU as well as any creations from outside internships or projects. This collection includes a variety of pieces such as magazine layouts, t-shirt designs, product packaging, advertisements and more! Plus, both seniors will showcase their Senior Capstone project. According to Simpson, these projects are large advertising campaigns based off of either real or fictitious events based in Oklahoma City.
The work featured in the show, Carden explained, reflects the the two students’ portfolios, a collective project encapsulating all of an individual’s projects done at SNU. These cumulative samples will be an essential tool when applying for design-related jobs, something both Simpson and Carden plan to do after graduation.
In addition to honoring these two students’ hard work, the Senior Design Show helps expose people to the importance of design. Simpson notes that the exhibit focuses on how graphic design work can be used in everyday life.
Both seniors feel the principles they have learned in their time at SNU have influenced their life beyond just the drawing board. “The design department is one of the best kept secrets on this campus,” Carden said, “…we are taught how to be lifelong learners and problem solvers. These skills extend well past the requirements of a good designer, but are the foundations of a good person.”
Professor Whitney Porch-VanHeuvelen hopes that attendees will “see what a fantastic job our students are doing and that our department is graduating incredibly skilled graphic designers who are prepared to enter a very competitive arena.”
Come congratulate your peers and enjoy creative design as well as refreshments at the Senior Art and Design Show on Friday, May 9th from 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Building.
