Whether you live in Bethany, or home is just too far away to travel for a visit over the upcoming Labor Day weekend, here are a few suggestions of cheap events to keep you entertained around the Oklahoma City area.
· SGA will be sponsoring two free events for students. For the guys, NO GIRLS ALLOWED starts Saturday, September 5th, at 2:00 p.m. on Snowbarger Lawn. There will be both ultimate frisbee and food. Not to be left out, ladies can attend NO BOYS ALLOWED Saturday, September 5th, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Marian Redwine’s house (7921 NW 38th Street Bethany, OK 73008). There will be swimming, games and a free lunch.
· Haven’t seen “Guardians of the Galaxy” yet? Maybe you would just like a chance to watch it for free under the Oklahoma sky. Either way, GLOW, presented by the Oklahoma Boathouse District, will be presenting live music, food trucks and a free screening of “Guardians of the Galaxy” Friday, September 4th. Live music starts at 6:30 p.m. and the movie starts at 8:30 p.m. For information on this and other GLOW events you can visit the Boathouse District’s webpage.
· Arts Festival Oklahoma will be taking place at Oklahoma City Community College Saturday, September 5th through Monday, September 7th. While buying the art and food will cost you, admission is free for those that just want to window-shop and watch the free entertainment. A variety of entertainment is offered all three days and will be headlined by fireworks and the Oklahoma City Philharmonic on Sunday, September 6 at 8:00 p.m. For more information you can visit the official website.
· If your idea of relaxing is taking in a baseball game, then the Oklahoma City Dodgers have you covered this Labor Day weekend. The Dodgers will be taking on the Memphis Redbirds Friday, September 4th and Saturday, September 5th, at 7:05 p.m. Sunday, September 6th, the Dodgers take the field at 2:05 p.m. Seats start as cheap as $10 for general admission lawn seating. All three games will take place at the Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. For more information and tickets you can visit the Dodgers official website.
If you choose to lay in bed until class on Tuesday or to enjoy one of the above activities, we should remember why Labor Day was started. While it is argued whether Matthew Maguire or Peter McGuire founded the holiday over one hundred years ago, it was Peter McGuire that said we should honor the workers that “who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold.”
