Answering the Call: Jill Pense’s Journey at SNU

Jill Pense, a sophomore nursing major from Edmond, Oklahoma, has always had a connection to Southern Nazarene University. Her grandmother attended when it was still Bethany Peniel College, so SNU was always on her radar. However, it was not until she visited campus for a scholarship interview that she truly felt at home. “The moment I arrived, I got chills–I just knew this was where God was calling me to be,” she recalls.

However, midway through her sophomore fall semester, she felt a shift in her heart. “I loved biology, but something was missing. Then, I felt God putting nursing on my heart,” she explains. Within days, she changed her major and has fully embraced the path ever since. She describes the transition as seamless, saying she has been “absolutely loving it” and embracing both the challenges and opportunities that come with nursing.

Beyond her academics, Pense is an active leader in campus life. As a resident advisor, she takes pride in being a source of support for her peers. “I love being someone others can rely on,” she says. As an RA, I get to build relationships and help create a community where people feel safe and supported.”

She also serves as a campus tour guide–something she initially found intimidating but has grown to enjoy. “At first, I was not comfortable speaking in front of groups, but giving tours has helped me step outside my comfort zone. Now, I love sharing my experiences and showing prospective students what makes SNU special.”

Pense’s journey at SNU has also been one of deep spiritual growth. “When I first came to SNU, I felt God calling me to take the next step in my faith,” she mentions. The relationships she has built with faculty and professors, who intentionally connect with students, have truly inspired her to pursue her faith. “I have grown so much in my relationship with Christ here because I am surrounded by people who also walk in faith, and that has made all the difference.”

These experiences continue to shape her perspective and decisions. Whether she’s studying, mentoring fellow peers, or guiding visitors around campus, she approaches each opportunity with enthusiasm and a heart for service.

When asked about advice she would give to incoming students, Pense underscores the importance of perspective. “Do not stress about the little things–everything will work out in the end. College flies by, so embrace every moment. Get involved, take chances, and enjoy the journey.”

With a clear vision for her future and a dedication to both leadership and service, Jill Pense is making an impact at SNU. As she continues her nursing education, she hopes to use her skills to provide compassionate care and positively influence the lives of others.
