From September 15th to October 15th, Hispanic Heritage Month provides a dedicated time to honor and celebrate the contributions of Hispanic communities. At SNU, this month is highlighted by activities and reflections that emphasize the importance of Hispanic heritage. I spoke with Rosario Garcia, a professor and financial literacy specialist for Student Support Services (SSS), and Abby Alvarado, the president of the Hispanic Latinx Student Society (HLSS), to explore their perspectives on this month along with the celebrations at SNU.
Garcia, a first-generation college student from Mexico, shared how her background influenced her academic and professional journey. Arriving in the United States at just fourteen years old with English as her second language, Garcia faced challenges that shaped her approach to education. For Hispanic Heritage Month, Garcia envisions celebrations that extend beyond traditional events. She advocates for a mix of cultural festivities and educational resources, such as a mentorship program where upperclassmen can guide incoming students. “I would love to have mentoring programs where upperclassmen take incoming freshmen and say, ‘Hey, it took me a few years to get used to what you’re going through, let me help you!’” Garcia also dreams of organizing community-focused events like “cafecito con pan” sessions, where students can discuss navigating life as a Hispanic individual.
Alvarado is passionate about creating a sense of belonging for students. Reflecting on her own experiences, Alvarado shared, “I want to make people feel like they belong.” Our Hispanic Latinx Student Society is actively planning events that welcome everyone on campus. During Hispanic Heritage Month, they will be hosting “Fiesta” on October 3rd from 5:00 pm to 7:30 pm, featuring carne asada, a piñata party, chips, games, and a vibrant environment. “We’re doing a combination of carne asada night and piñata party to bring so many more people together. It’s going to be so fun,” Alvarado enthusiastically said.
Hispanic Heritage Month at SNU is a time for reflection, celebration, and connection. As the month unfolds, students and faculty are invited to participate in events, engage with different cultural perspectives, and contribute to a more inclusive campus community.
