Have You Ever Wanted to Be Published?
Your opportunity is here, but only until January 31st! The Authentic Expressions team wants you to apply. If you are an SNU student, staff member, or faculty member, you are eligible to submit your work. Whether it is art, photography, poetry, short stories, or even music, they want to see your creativity. Cannot decide what to submit? No problem! Each person can submit up to three pieces.
You might think nothing you have is worth submitting, but take inspiration from SNU student, Anna Tatman. Last year, on a whim, she submitted a poem she had written years ago and won! When asked about it, she recalled her process: “I wrote it when I was fifteen. I had just had a falling out with one of my best friends and wrote about all of the things that reminded me of her. They were always the color yellow.”
Wait, winning is a possibility?
Absolutely. One winner will be chosen from the submissions. Beyond the intrinsic value of being published, contributors will receive a physical copy of the magazine. Plus, there are cash prizes for the top three submissions.
If you are hesitant because you do not see yourself as an artist, Tatman has some advice. “Go for it. There is no better way to get yourself out there than doing the magazine. Put on your resume that you are a published photographer or a published author. That’s huge! It’s also a cool thing to brag about.”
Bailey Cauley, the director of the magazine, adds, “It’s not just your typical ‘creatives’ submitting. We have the rugby coach, the alumni director, the graphic designer, and football players submitting.”
So, what is stopping you? Dust off that poem you wrote at 15, find that song buried in your notes app, revisit the photos you took on vacation last summer, or share that art piece you made just for fun. Even the sculpture you made from odds and ends could be worth submitting. There’s no harm in trying–and it’s easy to do!
Just make sure to submit your work by January 31. Flyers with submission QR codes can be found across campus, including next to the vending machine in the library. Simply scan the code to upload your photos and PDFs. For physical art, take a picture and upload it. If you have a song, submit both the recording and the sheet music.
Unleash your creative side and submit today!
