SNU has brought on a caring team of cafeteria employees who help nourish students during the day. Whether it be before or right after class ends, students can head over to the cafeteria and get a hot meal that will help satisfy their hunger. The cafeteria employees supply students with a variety of food, while also ensuring safety procedures to prevent cross-contamination in the meals.
Each employee in the cafeteria who cooks the food, cleans the kitchen, works the counter, etc, deserves recognition for their hard work, dedication, and care for our health and hunger. Their work ethic helps make SNU a welcoming environment. To bring notice to more cafeteria employees, I interviewed Marsha Britt.
Britt has been a cook for 30 years. Since she was a kid, her single mother would work long hours to provide for her and her younger sibling, resulting in her doing most of the meal preparation. “Since I was the oldest, I would fix my brother and I PB&J sandwiches until I was old enough to actually cook.” She added, “The first meals I would cook were spaghetti and tacos.”
When moving to SNU, everyone has a story for why they came here, and that applies to many of the employees as well. I asked Britt what made her move to SNU, and she responded, “I previously worked here 5 years ago, and I remember liking the students and the Christian college. The people here are nice because of their religious background.” She also shared, “I also like to meet exchange students and learn about their backgrounds as well.”
SNU prides itself on finding belonging on campus for anyone from students to professors, and employees. Since coming back to SNU, I asked Britt how working here has been. She answered, “It has been good so far. There is always something going on that is fun and eventful.”
Students can find Britt in the cafeteria on weekends working away to make sure we are all well-fed. You can try her favorite dishes, which include, “Stir fry on Fridays and omelets on Sundays.” Showing appreciation to Britt as well as other cafeteria workers by greeting them or thanking them for their contributions can help show employees they are seen by students. A student, Daniel Yeager, said some encouraging words to Britt, “Welcome back to the SNU family! It’s awesome to have someone else with us in the cafeteria. We appreciate all that you do!”
