The Spring semester has begun and for all students new or old to SNU, something that is equally agreed upon is performing well academically. However, in college, students are bound to face some tricky assignments and topics, and may need help preparing for tests. This is where the SNU Writing and Tutoring Center is here to help.
Students can seek on-campus tutoring through fellow students. Tutors are students who help others understand a subject they are struggling with. Each tutor is diverse in the subject they teach through both knowledge and passion. Amber Evans, a new student-tutor for biblical languages, shares her inspiration for tutoring. “I like the subject I’m tutoring for, and when I found the need to do it, I applied for the position.”
Each student is unique in how they study and learn their materials. Tutoring involves communication between tutors and students to create a productive tutoring session. Lillian Savage, student tutor for cells and systems shares, “Students can have a specific question to prepare mentally, have homework out, or any resources that will be helpful for the tutors and themselves.”
Student tutors face the challenges of balancing both school work and extracurriculars. Because of this, many create a schedule that assists them. Jacob Thornton, tutor for political science, shares his regime for balancing life. “Once you find your routine for the semester, it’s easy to find what time to block out for student tutoring. The older you get through college, the better you are at responsibilities. I make sure I’m not overwhelmed for students who need the tutor’s aid.”
Tutors are wonderful resources for students to get help in their academic subjects. Maddy Booth, a student tutor for various physical therapy classes, shares what she wants students to expect from tutoring sessions. “I can schedule a time for your availability. I would like students to know that I am available for your success; I want them to be comfortable with questions and know that we won’t look at you differently because you go to tutoring.” Booth adds, “It’s extra helpful that you don’t have to pay to succeed through tutoring.”
Every professor and student tutor wants the best outcome for their students to learn and grow in the subject they are struggling with. To schedule an appointment with a tutor, students can go through the Navigate app, go to the applications tab, and click on appointments. Remember, tutoring is free and the tutors are happy to be here for you!
