The Impact of a Graduate Assistant

The Impact of a Graduate Assistant

When it comes to college athletics and activities at SNU, graduate assistants, or GAs, play a key role in their success. The graduate assistant position is extremely beneficial for students of many interests. The responsibilities and tasks of a Graduate Assistant vary, depending on the type of GA. Juan “Carlos” Zepeda takes the role of Southern Nazarene University’s Commuter Life GA.

The Commuter Life position holds many purposes and results in multiple positive outcomes. From event planning to building relationships with students, Zepeda effortlessly stays busy. “I am focused on helping students in their lives, spiritually and academically,” said Zepeda. The job also allows Zepeda to provide additional services and resources for the commuters on campus.

Although he is a graduate assistant, Zepeda is also still a student. “Between school, the GA role, and football, my days can look hectic at times, but I make sure to keep my weekday mornings consistent.” Consistency is extremely important for maintaining the commuter life position in a stress-free manner. On weekday mornings, Zepeda spends his time serving commuter students in a variety of ways. “I love going to my office and writing personal letters to students. I spend a few hours a week meeting with them to get to know them and their stories,” shared Zepeda. Making all students, not just the commuters, feel welcome and at home is crucial for Zepeda. “My hope is to make all students feel like they are seen, heard, and loved.”

Because he takes on the GA role, intentionality and reflection are vital for Zepeda’s overall success. “I’ve practiced a lot of reflective listening with students and even continue to find the resources that can help them with whatever issues they are facing.” He has also come to realize that his own football teammates fall into the demographic that he serves. The audience that the commuter life GA reaches is so broad that having a willingness to serve is extremely important for the success of the students.

I love my family so much, and I want to make them proud in everything that I do.” Keeping true to his words, Zepeda is constantly working to improve the lives of the students that he serves and makes his family proud by doing so. Faith is another dominant motivator for Zepeda. “I stay disciplined by keeping God first. The Lord guides me and has provided a lot of stability in my life,” he commented. Zepeda is constantly working to fill his spiritual cup, so he can pour into others.

Zepeda’s servant mindset, hardworking nature, and passion for people help him be the best leader he can be. From his role of being a Resident Advisor during his undergraduate degree to now being the Commuter Life Graduate Assistant, he continues to pour into the people around him and point them to Jesus. SNU is lucky to have people like Zepeda working and caring for its students.
