The Reality of the SNU Baseball Off-Season

The Reality of the SNU Baseball Off-Season

For athletes, the off-season is a period of time to rest, recover, and focus more on the fundamental elements and developments of their sport. When comparing it to the regular season, some see the off-season as insignificant. However, for baseball players, Brady Benedict and Reid Jacob, the fall activities are just as important as the spring. The Southern Nazarene University baseball team utilizes the off-season by setting personal and team goals, staying consistent on the field and in the weight room, and intentionally building relationships with one another.

Benedict explains how the off-season is not really time off from the game. “We start fall practice almost immediately after stepping on campus.” The boys partake in practices five days a week and meet in the weight room four days a week for lifts. Although the schedule is strenuous, it is extremely beneficial in the long run. “It will allow me to be the best I can be in the spring, not only for me but for my team,” declares Benedict. Agreeing with Benedict, Jacob followed by explaining how the overall off-season structure “helps the team stay on track for the spring.”

Setting team and individual goals is key for preparing for the regular season. Goals build motivation, accountability, and a positive self-image. As an individual, Benedict wishes to become a better leader on and off the field. “Sometimes I focus too much on stats and my own personal things. I want to be the guy on the team that everyone can rely on.” Jacob outlines a few of the team goals set for this year. “Im

proving our energy is a big goal for us this season.” Having high energy during off-season activities will result in a positive team environment. Higher energy levels also contribute to better engagement among players. “Another one of our team goals is to get closer as a team,” says Benedict. “We have a lot of new guys this season, and I think building stronger relationships with each other will help us reach our individual goals more easily.”

Team bonding might be the most important part of the off-season. Building relationships among the team creates a positive atmosphere, which translates to better athletic performances. Whether it’s a team outing or acts of service, the SNU baseball team is always working to improve their team connections. “Coach Ledbetter organizes outings for us. For example, as a team, we went to the movie theater, which helped us spend more time together and build our relationship off the field.” The boys also serve together. Benedict expresses how significant it is to volunteer as a team. “We helped with the food drive. I think that was huge because we all came together as a team to help those in need.”

Whether lifting weights, volunteering, or creating a common goal, the off-season is crucial for the SNU baseball team. “The training and practice we are doing is getting us prepared for the competition we are going to face,” says Jacob. The work being put in this fall will positively benefit the team in the spring. The Crimson Storm baseball season is just around the corner, so make sure you show support and catch this awesome team in action this spring.
