Valentine’s Day at SNU

Valentine’s Day at SNU

Hallmark has sold us on red cards and grand gestures, but love is more than just a single day or the material things used to celebrate it. Knowing your significant other and spending quality time together can be more fulfilling than receiving a fifty-count box of Ferrero Rocher (though that would certainly be appreciated). Quality time can take many forms, such as a movie night, a walk, a picnic, playing games, and more.

Bethany Crouch, the captain of the equestrian team, is celebrating her first Valentine’s Day with her boyfriend, and they have planned a quiet day together. “We are going to have a relaxing day together and exchange small presents,” she shares.

Thomas Cruzan, a pastoral ministry major at Southern Nazarene University (SNU), has different plans, as his girlfriend is a busy genetics student at another college. He explains, “We have a long-distance relationship, so we stay close by calling and keeping in contact. We also set up times when we are both available to get together on weekends when I’m not debating and she’s not busy either.” While they are not meeting in person for Valentine’s Day, they still make time for each other through video games and phone calls.

For those planning to go on dates, there are several scenic destinations nearby. Notable locations include Lake Holdhercloser, excuse me, Lake Overholser, Eldon Lyon Park, and Stinchcomb Wildlife Refuge. Alternatively, for couples who enjoy the city, downtown Oklahoma City offers many engaging activities such as shopping in Bricktown, axe throwing, visiting an escape room, bowling, or exploring one of the many museums.

But what if you are living, laughing, and loving in singleness?

Any of the aforementioned activities can be enjoyed with one or more friends. A particularly fun option is shopping for discounted chocolates and candies from various stores. Additionally, SNU is hosting Heartpal, a night of dancing and fun with friends.

For those who do not find that type of event appealing, there are plenty of other options. Consider watching a Hallmark movie, hosting a PowerPoint party, crafting Valentine’s Day cards, playing volleyball, or even going to Waffle House at 3 a.m. The possibilities for celebrating with friends are endless—all it takes is some brainstorming and schedule coordination.

Whether single or in a relationship, take the opportunity to connect with loved ones this Valentine’s Day and let them know how much they mean to you.
