MaK Wilkerson, a sophomore mass communication major, is carving her path with purpose and dedication. Born and raised in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma, Wilkerson is more than just a student–she’s a clarinetist in the SNU band, a previous NSI mentor, and a passionate advocate for both faith and relationships.
Reflecting on her upbringing, Wilkerson shares, “I grew up in a Southern Baptist household where there was constantly a right and wrong. The church was how my life was framed.” Her senior year of high school brought challenges, but her visit to SNU was a turning point. “The moment I came for my tour at SNU, I felt at home. It was a feeling that I could see myself being happy and growing my relationship with Christ here.”
Music plays a significant role in Wilkerson’s life on campus. As a dedicated member of the marching band, she starts her days early, rehearsing at 7 am. “In the band, we have to memorize and strive to be as close to perfect as we can.” This commitment to excellence extends beyond music, influencing other areas of her academic and personal life.
Wilkerson’s involvement as an NSI mentor this year left a lasting impact on her. “My NSI group changed my perspective in the sense of knowing that SNU was a safe place,” she explains. This experience even inspired her to minor in theology. With an open mind, Wilkerson envisions multiple career paths ahead of her. “I could see myself being a news broadcaster, a journalist, a public speaker, but now I could also be a youth pastor.” What unites these possibilities is her desire to sit down with others for honest, vulnerable conversations. “If people are going through something, I want to help them through those experiences.”
Time management is a key aspect of Wilkerson’s success. As an introvert, she balances her studies with downtime, often retreating to her room to focus on homework. However, she recognizes the importance of relationships, both for personal connection and as an escape from the pressures of student life. She says, “I really think that relationships are important, both for being for and with one another, but also to be an escape.” Hanging out with friends and attending late-night on Wednesdays helps Wilkerson recharge and stay grounded.
MaK Wilkerson is a shining example of resilience, faith, and community at SNU. Whether through her love for music, mentorship, or future ambitions, she is making an impact and leaving a legacy of authentic connection.
