As a commuter student perpetually on the hunt for the perfect off-campus study spot, I have sipped my way through countless coffee shops in search of that ideal blend of ambiance, caffeine, and Wi-Fi. Today, I am sharing my personal quest for the ultimate study haven, along with insights from my fellow peer, Lillian Savage, to guide you to the best off-campus shops for hitting the books.
For many students, off-campus coffee shops offer a unique environment conducive to studying. As for me, some frequent spots that are on my go-to list every week are Harvey Bakery, Classen Coffee Co., Perets Dessert & Coffee Bar, Willow Coffee Company, and The Prov. Coffee & Bakery. How I choose often depends on what fits with the little free time I have. For example, Aspen Coffee Company is near the restaurant where I work, so on weekends I study there while I am on my break between my morning and evening shifts. I also factor in whether I am studying alone or with friends. If I am with a group, I do not mind busier locations since I already know I probably will not be all that productive.
When it comes to amenities, I look for visually appealing coffee shops that have a variety of syrups, comfortable seating, good internet connection, and plenty of outlets to plug in my devices.
When I asked Savage about her favorite study spots, she mentioned some of the same places as me, but also highlighted Eote Coffee, Clarity Coffee Co., and Coffee Slingers. The appeal of these shops, she explained, lies in their distinct ambiance. “Having an ambiance that is aesthetic, calming, with darker lighting, good food, etc., makes these coffee shops stand out from SNU’s,” Savage claimed.
Her choice of location also depends on what level of productivity she needs. She considers factors like busyness, potential for socializing, and even the playlist. “Having a few shops across Oklahoma City that are specifically for studying always helps my brain focus and lock in when I get there, especially since I am usually there for long periods at a time,” she expressed.
Ultimately, Savage feels that studying off-campus helps her refocus and find joy in her environment after spending hours in lecture.
For students like Savage and me, coffee shops are more than just places to grab a caffeine fix; they are essential resources for academic success and personal well-being. Between the delicious pastries and the carefully curated playlists, these spots create an atmosphere perfect for both focused work and social interaction.
Students, take this as your sign to step off campus and explore the coffee shops around OKC–you might just find your new go-to spot for acing those exams and enjoying the journey along the way.
