Bonded by Dodgeball: SNU Students Bring the Energy

At Southern Nazarene University, intramural events are more than just games. They give students a chance to build friendships, show school spirit, and create memories that last beyond the final whistle. This past week, students packed the gym for the dodgeball tournament, where teams brought energy, creativity, and plenty of competitiveness. Two participants, Jayy Kasino and Kennard Kennard, shared their thoughts on the experience and insight into what makes dodgeball special at SNU.

For Kasino, joining the tournament was a simple decision. His friends reached out, and he was ready to jump in. “My friends texted me and asked if I wanted to play, and I said yes,” he explained. His team’s pregame routine set the tone for their energy. “We listen to Soulja Boy and Lil Will and hit the dougie,” Kasino said, describing the fun and the way they approached the game. Once the game started, though, his mindset was simple: “Hit everybody and don’t get hit.” One of his favorite moments came before even throwing a ball, stepping onto the court while listening to “Stanky Leg.” When asked to sum up dodgeball in one word, his answer was the bond that held his team together: “Teamwork.”

Kennard approached the event with a different perspective, using it as an opportunity for growth. “I joined the dodgeball event because I wanted to further my leadership skills,” he voiced. His preparation focused on faith and confidence. “My team and I got ready through prayer and pure confidence.” Like Kasino, his strategy on the court was very simple too:  “Don’t get hit!” Beyond the gameplay itself, Kennard pointed to the creativity and school spirit that made the tournament stand out. “My favorite dodgeball moment is the themes,” he claimed, “the costumes and team identities lit up the event.” For him, the one word that described dodgeball best was “Determination.”

Together, both players highlighted the unique mix of fun and focus that dodgeball brings to SNU intramurals. Whether through dancing, music, or prayer, students prepared in their own ways but shared the same goal of competing hard and enjoying the moment. The tournament reminded everyone that dodgeball isn’t just about dodges and throws–it’s about community, energy, and the memories made with friends.
