Transferring to a new university can be both exciting and intimidating–new classes, new faces, and an entirely new community to navigate. For students like Ireland Jeffery and Pendo Miregi, making the move to Southern Nazarene University has been a life-changing experience filled with growth, connection, and opportunity.
For graduate student Ireland Jeffery, the transition to Southern Nazarene University was met with open arms and genuine kindness. “Do not be scared,” she expressed. “Everyone is so welcoming, and I have not met a single person not willing to help out–both faculty and students–with any problem I have encountered.” This sense of belonging is something many transfer students look for, and at SNU, Jeffery has found just that. Her favorite memory so far has been meeting new people she would have never crossed paths with if she had not transferred. “I hope to leave a small legacy with the people that are here after I graduate,” she added, “and make an impact on those around me.”
Athletics inspired junior Pendo Miregi’s journey to SNU. Originally from Adrian College, she decided to transfer because of the university’s growing rugby program. “For me, what made me choose between SNU and another college was the coach,” she explains. Having a supportive athletic environment made her decision clear. The transfer process, Pendo says, went smoothly thanks to the guidance she had received. “I had my coach helping, and there was also someone from the school texting me and walking me through the whole process,” she recalls.
Adjusting to a new environment, however, took time. “As a transfer, my first impression was that it felt different from my old school,” Miregi shared. “I was used to a more energetic atmosphere, so this one felt a bit underwhelming at first, especially due to the size.” Despite that initial difference, she soon discovered the close-knit community that defines Southern Nazarene University, where students and faculty genuinely care about their community’s well-being.
For both Jeffery and Miregi, transferring to Southern Nazarene University has been more than just a location change; it has been a step toward personal growth and connection. Through supportive peers, caring professors, and a welcoming campus, they have found a place where they can thrive, build relationships, and leave their mark. Their stories reflect the strength of community at Southern Nazarene University, where new beginnings are embraced, diversity is celebrated, and every student is empowered to chase their goals, both academically and personally.
