Southern Nazarene University’s annual Silent Disco returned with flashing lights, lively music, and a community spirit that brought students together for one unforgettable evening. Each year, the event transforms the campus into a vibrant dance floor where students can unwind, let loose, and celebrate the joy of college life.
For many students, Silent Disco is more than just a themed party — it’s a highlight of the semester.
“I enjoy the disco nights,” Lesieli Tonga-Vaeno said with a smile. “I look forward to this event every year because it allows me to be with my teammates, have fun, and take a day off from rugby.”
Tonga-Vaeno also mentioned that she loves the atmosphere the night creates. “I enjoy the vibe that’s given at Silent Disco. It just allows us to have fun and be ourselves,” she reflected.
The event, held at La Joya Event Center this year, featured colorful lights, retro music, and plenty of laughter. From groovy outfits to spontaneous dance battles, students embraced the spirit of the night.
“My favorite moment was getting to dance with all of my rugby teammates who showed up,” Alia Vunipola recalled. “It’s always great when the team comes together off the field to just relax and enjoy each other’s company.”
Vunipola added that she’d love to see more students join next year. “Honestly, I think people should try and attend more school events,” she encouraged. “It’s more fun than a lot of us would think.”
Both Tonga-Vaeno and Vunipola agreed that Silent Disco provides a much-needed break from academic stress and athletic commitments. The laughter, music, and dancing create an atmosphere that’s both nostalgic and refreshing.
While students enjoyed the glowing lights and good music, few realized how much work goes into making the event happen. This year’s event was organized by Lydia Mitchell, SNU’s social life student lead, who offered insight into planning one of the university’s favorite traditions.
“To plan an event like this, you have to start working well ahead of time,” Mitchell explained. “We first pick a theme that can be used for our poster, advertisement, and decorations. Then we find a venue that works with the theme, rent headphones, book a DJ, and take care of all the smaller details for the day of.”
This year marked Mitchell’s first time organizing the disco — a role that comes with both responsibility and excitement. “Each year, the event is slightly different,” she noted. “We try to theme them differently and switch up the venues so students don’t feel like they’re going to the same event four times in a row while in college.”
Still, pulling off a large campus event doesn’t come without challenges. “Advertising is definitely one of the hardest parts,” Mitchell admitted. “We have an incredible creative team that helps spread the word on social media, SNEWS, and posters around campus, but it’s still difficult to reach every student.”
Beyond logistics, Mitchell spoke about what truly motivates her involvement. “I wanted to be part of this event because creating spaces where people can have fun outside of school is something I’m really passionate about,” she expressed. “I love the community that SNU has provided me, and creating spaces for this community to grow and enjoy each other’s company is something I love doing.”
As the music faded and the lights dimmed, students left with smiles, tired feet, and memories that will last long after the glitter settles. Silent Disco continues to be one of Southern Nazarene University’s most anticipated traditions — one that celebrates togetherness, joy, and the simple power of dancing the night away.
“It’s events like this,” Tonga-Vaeno reflected, “that remind us why we love being part of SNU.”
