Senior Meyghan Powell’s main goal at Southern Nazarene University is to be a light for the Lord. God’s movement in the psychology major’s life is evident—from how she got to SNU to her role as president of the Women’s Student Society.
Powell grew up in a Christian home in Oologah, Oklahoma, but in high school her faith became personal as she began to see Jesus as her own Father and Savior. She started her college journey at Coffeyville Community College in Coffeyville, Kansas. Although she had not originally planned to attend college, the Lord led her on a very clear path there.
When it came time to take the next step in her education journey, she faced the question of where to go next. After stepping onto SNU’s campus, the Lord moved.
“I felt an abundance of comfort, community, and a blanket of peace over my heart and my mind,” Powell expressed.
She couldn’t ignore God’s strong call for her to come to SNU. As a transfer student, she began to take every opportunity to get involved in campus events.
In her junior year, she applied to SALT with one goal: “Be a light, be involved, make people feel at home, and be a leader.” After prayerfully asking God to open doors, she received the call to become president of the Women’s Student Society.
The Women’s Student Society is made up of women on campus who meet biweekly to chase after Jesus together through conversation, prayer, and studying His word. As president, Powell strives to create a safe space where “women come together to be here with the Lord.”
In September, Powell spoke at Kerygma, sharing her testimony with the student body and how the Lord has worked throughout her life.
“Leading up to it, I was nervous,” she explained. “But when I was in the room about to speak, the Lord and the Holy Spirit took over, and it was so fun.”
Powell shared how God has worked in her life during high school, the COVID-19 pandemic, her time at Coffeyville Community College, and now at SNU—including how she became a psychology major.
God made her calling to psychology very clear. Throughout her life, Powell has always loved helping others. She’s the person people tell their stories and struggles to, even if she doesn’t know them well. She loves to be a listening ear and a light for others when the world feels dark.
“I have always known that I wanted to help people with their hidden mental struggles,” she said. “I love to hear people and help them through anything that they need help with.”
Powell also offers words of wisdom and encouragement.
“You are not alone,” she voiced. “People think, ‘I’m the only one going through this,’ but other people are too. Be yourself all the time because the right people will show up and stay. They want to know the real you.”
Powell relies on good and faithful friends, her boyfriend, Nate Marrow, and her family to “keep me levelheaded and looking toward the Lord.” Above all, she depends on God, who gives her every opportunity—and she surrenders all things back to Him.
