SNU Students Answer Christ’s Call Through Local and Global Missions

Every mission trip at Southern Nazarene University begins with a single “yes.” That simple decision has sent students across the United States and around the globe, showing that following Christ means answering His call to serve both near and far. From local outreach in Arizona to international service in Portugal, students are discovering that missions shape their faith, leadership, and understanding of God’s work.

McKenna Franks, a nursing major who served in Portugal, shared, “I chose to do a global mission trip because Kezia Weaver had really been intentional about seeking me out, and really encouraging me to apply and take that leap of faith in trusting God.” She described a transformative moment: “God showed up for me in that moment amidst the hard and the new.”

Milly Gibson, a pastoral ministry major who served in Arizona, emphasized how local missions affirmed her calling. “I prayed and asked the Lord if this is what He wanted, and He provided a way for me to go!” she expressed. “After that trip, my view on cross-cultural relations has definitely changed. It broadens your perspective.”

Kezia Weaver, director of Student Ministries and SIMS coordinator, highlighted the combination of spiritual growth and practical preparation. “Missions are a crucial part of a Christlike life,” she voiced. “We try to put Christ at the center of all of it while also making things practical.” Weaver also emphasized the importance of relationships: “Some trips are physically demanding, but the relationships we make are just as important. Christ and Christian community are not just here at SNU; it’s everywhere all over the world.”

She also stressed SNU’s mission focus, “The Nazarene Church is mission-hearted and mission-focused. We are mission-minded, and that’s at the forefront of everything we do.”

This week’s SIMS chapel on Sept. 25 will feature student and guest speakers sharing their experiences. Weaver encouraged students to attend: “Come to hear why short-term missions are important and why students recommend SIMS.” She added that the chapel will help students take the next step: “After Tuesday chapel, I’ll send out an email with the application. Students can apply and start their journey in serving.”

Missions at SNU offer students more than travel experiences; they provide opportunities to live out their faith, deepen their relationship with Christ, and develop as leaders. From local schools to communities around the world, students are learning that serving others reflects God’s love and transforms both those they serve and themselves.

Whether navigating cultural differences abroad or supporting local communities, SNU students are discovering that missions are not just about action—they are about embodying Christ’s call to make disciples, build community, and serve faithfully. Every trip, big or small, local or global, begins with a choice to say “yes” and follow where God leads.
