Everyone at Southern Nazarene University knows Stormy, the beloved campus mascot. But the real story begins when the mask comes off. Behind the high-fives and photo ops is a student with a schedule, favorite study spot, and many secrets of their own. Stormy’s hidden identity is more than just a fun mystery; it is a reminder that every student at SNU carries a side of themselves the world does not see–talents, passions, and hobbies waiting to be shared.
Once class begins every morning, Stormy’s “secret life” comes alive. Balancing academics with campus activities is not easy. From late-night studies to library hangouts or even late-night runs to local Bethany spots, Stormy fills the schedule with moments that feel like home.
One big mystery remains: Where does Stormy spend free time? Is it mostly in the coffee shop or in the cafeteria? “I am a cafeteria kind of dog. I have so much variety you do not even know.” Stormy voiced.
When asked what makes SNU special, Stormy didn’t hesitate, “SNU is a great Christ-like place. So many people create and bring light–you can find so many people that will lighten up your day.” Stormy explained how chapel services and games are powered by people who bring light and call SNU home.
Keeping the secret is definitely not easy, either. With hundreds of eyes watching during games and events, staying anonymous definitely takes planning. Friends might suspect, but the fun part is protecting the magic for the fans who light up when they see Stormy pass.
Stormy is just one example of a “secret life” that exists at SNU. Every student carries a side of themselves that lives outside the classroom. Maybe it is writing music late at night, or pursuing a hobby no one else knows about. “Even though I have a mask on, I think some people should take off their mask and live life for who they truly are,” Stormy expressed. Stormy’s hidden identity mirrors the way students quietly chase their passions that might never appear on their transcripts. Stormy voiced, “They can not be afraid to put themselves out there. If you are keeping something hidden, like a talent that God has given you, you need to embrace your gift and just go for it.”
The secret life of Stormy is not just about the mascot. Whether you are a cafeteria dog or someone with a quiet hobby, everyone at SNU has a little “Stormy” in them. The suit may stay zipped and the secret may always stay hidden, but the invitation is open: chase your hidden passions and share your God-given talents.
