On April 9th and 12th at 6:30 pm and 7:30 pm at SNU’s football stadium, one of the most electric student events will occur at Southern Nazarene University. I am of course talking about Powderpuff football, a recurring tradition here on campus. For those of you who are not familiar with Powderpuff, it is a flag football tournament for women. In previous years, to switch things up even more, the guys who were normally on the field were dressed in uniforms on the sidelines doing cheerleader routines. Show up to see if this funny switch-up will happen again this year!
For many, it is an exciting (and amusing) time to watch some good old football out of season. For others, it is a great opportunity to watch your female colleagues engage in some not-so-friendly banter and sport. There will be t-shirts for each class, as well as Gatorade, pizza, halftime games, and much more!
Powderpuff football will feature each of the four classes, freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior, playing a shortened flag football game against a selection of the other three classes. It will be Freshman vs. Juniors, and Sophomores vs. Seniors on April 9th, with the winners of each game playing at 7:30 on April 12th, and the 3rd place game taking place at 6:30 pm. Some say the team to look out for in this football extravaganza is the freshman team, highlighted by star quarterback Jill Pense. The freshmen team will be coached by three football players, those being Evan Rader, Alex Batz, and myself, Dezmond Williams. The sophomore team will be coached by Karston Keene and Seth Spruiell. The junior team will be coached by Emmanuel Obinna, David Omosigho, and Grayson Tomberlin. Finally, the senior team will be coached by Carlos Zepeda, David Morales, Nick Blanchard, and Telanio Evans.
I asked the freshmen coaches what they were looking forward to most. Evan Rader said, “I am looking forward to that sweet feeling of winning the whole thing.” Adding onto this, Alex Batz commented, “Being involved in Powderpuff gives an exciting opportunity to express my love for football while engaging in a distinctive competition that unites the student body, fosters awesome coaching/player connections, and ensures a memorable SNU experience.”
As you can see, there are definitely some different focuses from the coaches, but nevertheless, they are more than ready to lead their team against what lies ahead. Practice will take place Thursday at 6:00 pm for those who participate, which you won’t want to miss!
