Is TikTok Taking Over?

“I’m a savage, yeah, classy bougie ratchet…” This Megan Thee Stallion song soared to the top of the charts as the #1 TikTok song of 2020. TikTok began in 2016 and started to become very popular in the United States in late 2018. People get on TikTok to be entertained and have a good laugh, which is why this app has become one of the most used social media platforms.

Social media is highly addicting, especially to the younger generations. Not only do people get on TikTok to watch funny videos, but people also enjoy creating their own videos. With everyone having an opportunity to go “viral” on this app, the amount of active TikTok users have skyrocketed to more than ever before. The large number of active users is also due to the fact that TikTok was just becoming very popular when the pandemic started, which gave people a lot of extra time at home to make videos of their own.

In a survey asking 50 SNU students what social media platform they spend most of their time on, 34% of them answered TikTok. That was the second-highest behind 40% saying Snapchat. This proves that TikTok has made it to the top of the social media world. SNU Director of Marketing and Communications for Traditional Admissions Sarah Roberts says, “For entertainment purposes, I think that TikTok is the main entertainment and influencer platform right now.” Whether that means making dance videos with friends, showing off your makeup skills or just watching the videos, TikTok is known to put a smile on people’s faces.

SNU student and TikTok influencer Parker Greenhill, with over 400,000 followers on TikTok, says his favorite part about TikTok is, “the diversity and acceptance of most of the people on the app.” From personal experience on TikTok, I would agree with this statement. TikTok is more accepting of people of different shapes, sizes, colors, and backgrounds than any other social media platform. This is what makes TikTok different from all of the others, and another reason why TikTok is becoming superior in active users over any other social media platform.

TikTok is a place for creativity in any way imaginable. The diversity of videos makes the app more than just videos of people dancing. Like Parker mentioned, the diversity and acceptance of people are a very special part of the app. If TikTok continues to achieve those two things, the sky’s the limit for what this social media platform can accomplish.
