Movies SNU Students are Most Excited to see in 2024

As students have returned to school for a new semester of fun and learning, there is also an exciting new year of movies that awaits us. Many different kinds of movies come out each year, running the gamut from comedies to action films, to horror movies, and even to the occasional arthouse film in limited release.

No matter what is playing, movies are a very fun social gathering for SNU students, both during the school year and as a way to keep in touch over the summer. Movies are also something that can bond people together for a variety of different reasons. Some people go to the movies to have fun and hang out with friends. Others, such as SNU student Zach Moore, look forward to films with “an intriguing plot or try to do something new.” Whatever ends up driving us to the movie theater to see the newest feature presentation, there are bound to be choices that cater to everybody’s different tastes.

Dune: Part Two

The highly-anticipated continuation of one of 2021’s biggest films, Dune: Part Two, continues the story of Paul Atreides as he journeys toward uniting the people of Arrakis against the family of Baron Harkonnen, while also looking to avenge the loss of his father. Directed by Denis Villeneuve and starring a sprawling ensemble cast, this film opens on March 1 in theaters around the country.

The Fall Guy

An adaptation of the 1980s television series with the same name, The Fall Guy, stars Ryan Gosling, coming right off of Barbie, as an over-the-hill stuntman who ends up investigating the disappearance of a movie star to save a film directed by his ex-girlfriend, played by Emily Blunt. The Fall Guy debuts in theaters on May 3, 2024.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

The latest entry in the Mad Max franchise, this film tells the story of Imperator Furiosa, years before she would come into contact with Max Rockatansky in Mad Max: Fury Road, showing her journey from being kidnapped by a biker gang to making a great effort to return home. Starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth, and directed by series helmer George Miller, the film opens on May 24, 2024.

Deadpool 3

The only entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to debut this year, Deadpool 3, sees the return of Ryan Reynolds as the Merc with the Mouth himself, as well as Hugh Jackman’s return to the character of Wolverine. The film, which is sure to be littered with plenty of playful cameos and game-changing revelations for the MCU going forward, will be released on July 26, 2024.

Joker: Folie a Deux

The hotly-anticipated sequel to one of the most surprising billion-dollar movies ever, Joker: Folie a Deux, continues the story of Arthur Fleck, played by Joaquin Phoenix, and his descent into becoming the Joker. Not much is known about the film, except that it will see the introduction of Harley Quinn, played by Lady Gaga, and that it will lean further into the musical influences and flights of fancy that the first film only touched upon. The film will be released on October 4, 2024.

When asked about these upcoming movies, Moore acknowledged that all of them were sure to be intriguing or exciting due to a well-developed combination of “the plot, cinematography, and visuals.” These movies, as well as many others, have made 2024 a very exciting year of cinema to look forward to.
