Fall semester has officially kicked into full gear, and as students settle into their classes, it is important to know what services are available for their success. The Writing and Tutoring Center is an avenue that students can take when they get stuck on assignments in their classes or simply want someone to review their papers before they turn them in.
The Southern Nazarene University (SNU) staff encourages students to use this resource frequently. Misty Jaggers, Associate Vice President for Student Success, said, “The transition to academic writing is one of the most challenging transitions for first-year college students, so we really encourage our freshmen to utilize this service.”
Tutors that work at the center are recommended by SNU professors and receive training to ensure that students get the best services possible when they enter the Writing and Tutoring Center. Tutors who help with course-specific sessions are students who have also taken the classes, so they know how to help with specific questions.
Lorraine Wright, the Student Success Coordinator at SNU, said tutors at the Writing and Tutoring Center truly care about student success, describing them as charitable, loving, and genuine individuals.
Course-specific tutoring is offered at the center to provide students with more applicable help on their assignments. And each semester as the courses offered at SNU get shuffled, the Writing and Tutoring Center adjusts accordingly.
More intensive courses at SNU have a regular tutoring schedule, posted on the Writing and Tutoring Center website. For other courses, students can email tutors and set up one-on-one tutoring appointments.
Students can bring any papers for any course to the Writing and Tutoring Center for review and feedback from writing tutors.
Wright said Cells and Systems is the most commonly requested course for tutoring as discovered in past semesters. She recommends, especially, that students utilize the regular tutoring schedule for this course.
Students who need help studying Cells and Systems can stop by the Beaver Science Building, Room 201, on Mondays from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Thursdays from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday hours will be reduced to 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. beginning in October through the month of December.
A more comprehensive tutoring schedule can be found on the website under Keep Calm & Call a Tutor. Posters can also be found at various locations on campus.
The Writing and Tutoring Center is located in room LRC 112 next to the coffee shop. Services offered here are free to SNU undergraduate students.
To sign up for an appointment with a writing tutor, visit the Writing and Tutoring Center website at http://www.snu.edu/wtc or stop by the center on a drop-in basis. Tutors will provide students with 30-minute one-on-one sessions where they can answer questions and review papers.
