This past Sunday, the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers duked it out in the electric Las Vegas, Nevada at Allegiant Stadium for Super Bowl LVIII. Over 65,000 people attended the game with special appearances from Reba who sang the national anthem, Post Malone who sang “America The Beautiful,” and Usher who rocked the half-time show alongside special guest appearances by Alicia Keys and H.E.R. He ended his fantastic performance with bringing out Lil John, Jermaine Dupri, and Ludacris to perform his song “Yeah!” Many other well-known celebrities made appearances at the game such as Taylor Swift, Paul Rudd, Blake Lively, Ice Spice, and Jay-Z, among many other famous faces.
Just two weeks ago I was discussing with the students on campus who they thought would make it to the final game. I spoke to Donald May who plays football here at SNU, and he predicted that the 49ers would take home the win. He had also hoped that it would be the 49ers and the Ravens at the Super Bowl LVII, and he was betting on the Ravens to take the win. In addition to May, most other SNU students that I talked to also predicted that it would be the Ravens and the 49ers that would make it to this year’s Super Bowl. However, many said they would not be mad to see the Detroit Lions come out on top and meet the Baltimore Ravens in Vegas. Even SNU’s own Coach West said he wouldn’t be upset to see the Lions in the Super Bowl. The common denominator was that most people wanted to dethrone the Chiefs.
The Ravens have only appeared in two Super Bowls, winning both the 2001 and 2013 games. The 49ers on the other hand, have played in seven Super Bowls winning five: 1982, 1985, 1989, 1990, and 1995. This year’s real underdogs were the Detroit Lions who have never made it to the Super Bowl. Talking to my family and friends back in California, the majority of them were cheering for the 49ers and Ravens to make it to the Super Bowl and hoping for a 49ers victory. Unfortunately for them, the Ravens and Lions did not make it to the Super Bowl, and the Chiefs and 49ers were left to battle it out.
The Chiefs and the 49ers fought until the end being tied 19 to 19 late in the fourth quarter and moving into overtime. Then the 49ers got a field goal for a 22-19 lead. With only 13 seconds left in overtime, Patrick Mahomes threw a pass to Mecole Hardman who made the winning touchdown. The Chiefs ended up winning the game 25 to 22 as back-to-back Super Bowl Champions taking home the ring for the second year in a row. The Chiefs have now appeared in six Super Bowls, taking victory in four of them.
David Omosigho, a student and football player at SNU stated, “This was one of the best Super Bowls I have ever watched. It had the perfect amount of defense, offense, big plays, and turnovers. Not to mention the halftime show was elite. It was definitely an exciting game.” Although many of our wishes did not come true, it was a great game to watch until the end. Congratulations to the Kansas City Chiefs. Now it is time to get ready for the next football season!
