There are many different styles and aesthetics that surround us every day. Have you ever taken the time to consider what yours might look like? At SNU, everyone is uniquely their own, from faculty to students. So, I took the liberty to ask some of the students here on campus about their own personal styles.
In a fashion context, Aesthetics is about lifestyle, as well as visual and artistic elements that express a specific theme, mood, identity, or sense of community. In aesthetics, the -core suffix is used to emphasize a distinguishing feature. For example, cottage life in Cottagecore, dreamy imagery in Dreamcore, and casual imagery in Normcore. These are a few of the examples of different aesthetics that have arisen over the years, which in turn, may manifest themselves in peoples’ wardrobes. The top five most popular aesthetics on social media right now are Adventurecore, Barbiecore, Dreamcore, Cottagecore, and weirdcore.
Gisselle, a junior majoring in early childhood education, explained how she dresses each day, saying, “It just depends on my mood. I like to feel pretty.” When asked about her favorite styles, she said, “I like cute, casual, and semi-casual. She continues to explain that she likes a good mix of business and casual attire, but a style she would like to try is Fairycore.
Alley Marcus, a freshman majoring in nursing, discussed her style and how it affects her day-to-day life, saying, “Usually when I wake up, I just put something on to get me through my classes. Sometimes I come back and change again, but in the morning I hardly have time.” She describes her style as cozy and casual. She prefers to wear black, and when asked what style she would try in the future, she replied, “I don’t know. Maybe Cottagecore! Cottagecore sounds nice.”
Our dressing style is influenced by our characteristics, interests, values, and life experiences. Simultaneously, our clothing choices influence how others perceive our personalities. Dressing in a sense is an outward expression of our inner self, allowing us to visually communicate our identity, mood, and beliefs. Whether you’re the type to not put much effort into the way you dress or vice versa, it all makes you, you! Take some time to think about your own style and how the way you dress may impact your day.
